Term One

Week 4 Term 1

Learning Reflections.

Maths

This week in maths I learn't how to use estimation to estimate the answer. e.g

97+45=
To estimate this problem, you would think that the 97 would be rounded to 100, and the 45 will be rounded to 50.  So for the estimated answer, it would be 150.
I also learn't prime numbers. The first ten prime numbers are: 2,3,5,7,11,13,29,31,37 and 41. A prime number is it can only be divided by itself and one.

Visual Language:

In visual language we are making a poster all about us. It has to discribes your self and you can either do a layout of: past, present, future or a poster that discribes you. I am doing the poster that dicribes you. It has everything that is important to me on it and all the countries and beliefs on the poster as well.

Later on in this term we are going to Wellington for 5 nights. It is in week eight so 4 more weeks to go.

L.I. To write a ‘pourquio’ story explaining how/why something is.

How The Lion Found Its Mane

Long ago in a large jungle lived a lion. At this time, lions were known for very weak and wimpy creatures, and not to be known as ‘The king of the jungle’.This lion was called Leo, and he was a small lion and he had no friends because he was a lion. He was always sad and lonely and always got picked on.

One day, the biggest bully in Jungi school came up to Leo while he was eating his meat. Hilber the hyena came up to Leo and threw his lunch into the tree near by. Leo got all upset and tried to roar, but instead it came out like a croaky meow. Hilber and his mates ran off laughing and pointing at Leo. Leo felt ashamed and tried to hide his face. When the bell rang, all the students went back to class, but Leo decided he would not go to class and try to get his lunch box out of the tree. Leo started walking to the tree sturdy, but when he reached the tree he wasn't so sure any more. Would I get in trouble? He thought. By the time he reached the tree, his knees were wobbling and his eyes were red with tears. I can’t do this! So he turned around and went back to class.

At lunch time Leo was feeling very hungry. He looked up at the tree and felt ashamed. Why didn't I climb up the tree and get my lunch down. He took one last glance at his lunch and decided he would get his and show those bullies once and for all. He strode to the tree and started to climb it. He was making good progress and was already up to the first branch, though his lunch was on the forth. Just as he was about to reach up to the second, his paw slipped and he fell to the ground. everybody crowded around him, worried about if he was hurt. Everybody except Hilber and his mates. They were laughing their heads off, not even caring if Leo had really hurt himself.

Leo stood up and was in rage when he saw Hilber, Leo turned his back to them and attempted again to climb the tree. This time when Leo started to climb, he reached the third branch, but that was more like a small twig, and snapped to leave poor Leo plummeting to the ground. That made Hilber laugh even more. They started pointing at him, poking him even kicking him. When they had disappeared, poor Leo stood up and looked at his lunch. He was not giving up. He climbed straight up the tree.In a flash Leo the Lion was at the top of the tree. He grabbed his lunch and headed down the tree. By this time Hilber and his mates were all at the bottom of the, staring up in amazement. At the top of the tree it looked like the land had no end. Also at the top Leo saw a bee hive. He wonder if there were any bees inside, more importantly honey.

Leo peered inside the beehive to find a thousand eyes staring at him. They raged at him and the hive fell over and landed on poor Leo. He fell off the tree covered in honey, into long dead grass. Hilber was almost crying he was laughing so hard. This made Leo so mad he stood up and let out a tremendous ROAR! Leo couldn't believe what a noise he had just made. Hilber was astounded when he heard Leo roar. What Leo also couldn't believe was that all the dry grass stuck to the honey on his face. It looked a tremendous mane like a real King of the jungle.
And that's how the lion got its mane.

Project Huia Huia is a book based in 1947 when Mavis and Jim find the last hiua. The time line flicks back from 1947 to present day. In the present day, Ana, a leading expert in DNA research, wants to know where Jim last saw the Huia. Along with Jim and Ana is Logan. He is Jims grandson and he came to help find where the Huia was.

At the beginning Jim, Ana, Logan and the helicopter driver, went over the forest so Jim could give Ana an idea where he found the Huia. But when Jim points out a clear landing spot of where he saw the Huia, as they were landing, they got a powerful laser shone in the eyes and forced them to leave. As Jim starts the recording of his childhood memories, it goes back to hard times, even when their fighting against a family of thugs and criminals. When Olivia, the Huia, appears in Jim garden, him and his sister Mavis go on a adventure to find the Huia again. They go through the Gorge and through the tunnel on the jigger. The tunnel has always been a big ban in their house, but this time do they really have choice?

Olivia is always being attacked by other birds, especially Tuis. Though when Olivia was in the bush, she was attacked by a large group of Tuis. ‘She fell from the air, her wings no more use than a ripped parachute’. When they went into the bush to catch Olivia, they were followed by Daniel Carson and his brother Russell. They go into the bush as well, but with the intention to kill Olivia. As the chase began to find Olivia, Mavis and Jim find her first, hidden in a bush beside the tracks. Olivia is attacked again but this time with magpies.  As she lies across the train tracks, dead, Mavis and Jim come to get her and take her with them. As they were going to get her, the Carsons came to get her as well, and chased Mavis and Jim back into the tunnels. Mavis is crying and Jim feels weak, Mavis wraps Olivia's body is a rain coat while Jim was looking for a torch. as they were doing this, a train comes. They got right up against the wall, waiting for they train to pass, but instead it stops right in the middle of the tunnel. Jim puts the Huia in one of the tunnel holes and escapes.

In present day,Ana, Logan and Jim are going on walks around the area that Jim saw the Huia in. Along the way the meet up with Daniel Carsons Grandson, Daniel. He was the one who shone the laser in there eyes.
Daniel knows that they have the Huia, also hearing stories about his grandfather.

When an accident strikes, the container the Huia is is on fire and so is Daniel. Ana thinks that all her studying for 10 years have just disappeared, when Ana’s friend fished it out of the fire. Ana, Logan and Jim go into the lab to unwrap Olivia. While unwrapping, Ana's xray's the rain coat to check if there is an dangers . Ana was surprised to find that Mavis had Mummified Olivia when she wrapped Olivia. Ana has an idea to take the DNA out of the Huia and place it a different bird, like a magpie.
I liked the way that Des Hunt has written this book with each chapter shifting back through time and back to present day. I think Project Huia is not a book to be missed.

Cherry Lane 1

There was once an old man called Mr. Reb. Mr. Reb hasn't done any thing wrong, he has just been treated wrong his whole life.
When his wife died, he lost every thing, so he had to move into a little shack in the middle of no where. Over the years it turned into 'cherry lane.'  Mr. Reb was not happy with this and called the police. They said there was nothing the could do about it, but make a compromise instead. The deal was every house that got built on the lane, he got payed $100 000.  Mr. Reb was still not happy about this but he knew it was the best that they could do. When the lane was finished, and all the houses were built,  Mr. Reb was a muilty millionare. He spent most of his money on buying furniture and protecting his golden cherry tree in the middle of cherry lane.  Mr. Reb was happy for the first time in a while. Until one day, disaster stuck, and this is how it happened...
